The Cedar

Out front of my home stands a towering cedar tree. Old, strong, and nearly as tall as a four-story building, it greets everyone who travels our road. It has likely stood there for generations.

What fascinates me most is what cannot be seen. Beneath the surface lies an expansive root system—deep and wide under the earth—quietly providing the strength that allows the tree to endure every storm.

Each year this cedar gives us thirty or more saplings. We share them with neighbors and friends throughout our valley. It is a beautiful thought that this single tree now has offspring growing in many places, extending its life far beyond its own trunk.

The Lesson for Organizations

Organizations are not so different.

When people are truly at the center, organizations become living systems—capable of growth, resilience, and bringing good into the world.

But too often organizations focus only on what is visible: results, outputs, and short-term performance. Like a tree without strong roots, this kind of growth is difficult to sustain.

Healthy organizations grow from the ground up. Their roots are built through trust, clarity, shared purpose, and strong leadership.
